THE historic Mystery Plays in York will raise the city's profile on a par with this year's Royal Ascot and bring a £1m boom to the local economy.

York Council yesterday pledged its financial backing to bringing the Internationally-renowned productions back to the city's Minster following the success of the plays staged there to celebrate the Millennium.
City council leader, Coun Steve Galloway (Lib Dem, Westfield), said that the arrival of the plays scheduled for 2010 would create global interest and bring a major source of income to York's invaluable tourism trade.
York Council's executive met yesterday afternoon and gave the go-ahead for £100,000 revenue fundingover the next five years to help finance the Mystery Plays, which are expected to cost £1.5m to stage in 2010.
The York Cycle of Mystery Plays feature a largely amateur cast and are performed every three or four years, attracting visitors from all over the world.
