Major schemes include upgrades to four busy junctions on the city outskirts – on the A19 at Crockey Hill and on the A1079 at Dunnington; at Moor Lane on the south-west side of the city; and at Hopgrove roundabout.
A roundabout will be built at Moor Lane's junction with the outer ring road, at present the only such junction without a roundabout, while improvements to the Hopgrove roundabout have been planned as part of upgrading of the road network around Monks Cross in anticipation of extra traffic being generated by new business premises under construction there.
Bill Woolley, York Council's director of city strategy, said more than £3m was being invested in improvements to cycling and pedestrian routes in the city, including an off-road cycle link at
Heslington Lane and a cycle route between the railway station and the Nestlé
factory in Wigginton Road.
The pedestrian route from York city centre to the railway station is also to be improved.
The council intends to start consultation about extending the pedestrianised area in York city centre.
Traders and members of the general public have asked the council whether it would be possible to extend the existing footstreet restrictions, which prohibit vehcles during the daytime, further down Goodramgate and into the Fossgate area of the city.
