Jinnah curries favour with city

Group continues aggressive growth as group opens its latest restaurant only yards from another

ASIAN restaurant group Jinnah has continued its aggressive growth strategy by opening a curry house in York.
The group's latest restaurant – Spice Club in Monkgate – was due to be officially opened this evening.


The award-winning chain already operates restaurants in and around York at Flaxton, Haxby, Micklegate plus the Viceroy of India also on Monkgate, as well as running takeaways and restaurants in Harrogate and a cash and carry operation in Bradford.
The new Monkgate venue boats seating for 55, and will bring the number of sites in the Jinnah chain to six restaurants and two takeaways, boosting turnover of the family-owned group to about £3.5m.
Saleem Akhtar, who heads the Jinnah group, said Spice Club was the latest restaurant in the group's expansion plan.
"We have been in York for 15 years, and our customers here have been very loyal, so another venue in a prime position makes perfect sense," he said. "As well as benefiting from the great tourist trade, our regulars are curry connoisseurs, and its great to be able to cater for people who really know their food, and want to be adventurous with their curries.
"This is our fifth restaurant in or near the city, and we are looking at other investment opportunities in York already."
Founded in 1981 by the Bradford-based Akhtar brothers, the Jinnah group has grown from a single restaurant to a Yorkshire chain that now employs 200 staff and served more than 500,000 curries last year.
The Jinnah head office on the A64 at Flaxton also manages the group's 20,000 sq ft trade cash and carry outlet in Bradford. The cash and carry supplies restaurant owners across West and North Yorkshire with catering supplies, fresh meats and other ingredients.
The chain was named among Britain's top 100 curry houses out of more than 8,500 in the Best of Britain awards organised by the Good Curry Guide in 2004.
