Constantine The Great was proclaimed emperor of the Roman Empire when he was in York one thousand and seven hundred years ago in 2006. Constantine is thought to be responsible for shaping the religious and political map of Western Europe.
On July 25 2006 there will be a special service held at York Minster to commemorate the person responsible for initiating the worldwide spread of Christianity, which was little more than a subversive cult at the time. There will also be an exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum, in the Museum Garden in York, called York’s Roman Emperor that will run from March 31 to October 29 2006 |
